How to Learn Calligraphy on a Budget (or Even for Free!)
When you’re just starting out with calligraphy, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. There are so many tools out there, from brush pens to nibs to specialty papers, and let's not even think about how many different colours of inks there are, and if you're anything like me (hello, stationery addicts), it can be so tempting to want them all! However, I am here to show you why you don't need to spend big to create something beautiful.
Plus, in my opinion, by learning the basics with simple tools it can often lead to a stronger foundation giving you more consistent, beautiful letters. So if you're looking on learning calligraphy on a budget (or even for free), let's take a look at some easy, cost-friendly ways to get going.
1. Use what you already have at home.
This might seem a little boring, especially coming from someone who never needs and excuse to buy new stationery, but a pencil is a brilliant tool for learning the basic strokes, consistency, and form. It’s forgiving, erasable, and lets you focus on shape rather than ink flow, and this is the exact reason I use these in my courses and workshops. Whilst I recommend a B type pencil (such as a 3B) for ease of getting the thicker downstrokes, if all you have is an old IKEA pencil stashed down the side of your sofa then this will work too!
Aside from the pencil, you can also use other tools you may have around the house like:
- Crayola markers – they’re budget-friendly and great for learning brush lettering basics. Plus if you have kids like me there's a good chance you have a large supply of these lying around!
- Ballpoint pens – perfect for practicing faux calligraphy (where you thicken the downstrokes manually).
2. Make use of free resources.
There are so many free worksheets, guides, and practice templates available online (including in my very own Happy Letters Club members area ). These are designed to help you practice your strokes, letterforms, and flourishes at your own pace.
Many calligraphy communities, blogs, and creators offer free download in their own styles, which is a great way of practicing different techniques. You’ll be amazed how much you can learn with just a few printables.

3. Watch tutorials (for free!)
YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram are goldmines for free tutorials and tips. From basic brush stroke techniques to full lettering projects, you’ll find countless creators sharing their knowledge for free.
And the best part? You can watch them again and again, pausing and practicing at your own pace.

Lastly...
Learning calligraphy is a journey, not a race. Despite practicing calligraphy for 9 years now, I still use a pencil daily as there's so much beauty to be found in the basics. The pressure to have the “right” tools can hold us back from simply starting. But the truth is, you don't need everything—you just need to begin.
So start with what you’ve got. Practice a little each day, and when you’re ready to explore new tools, you’ll be able to go into them without the pressure.
