Day 3: DIY Christmas Banner

What you'll need

• Blank banner - the one I am using is from Hobbycraft
• Posca Pen PC-1MR in a colour of your choice.
• Optional - Twine/Ribbon for hanging if you want to switch out the one it comes with like I did.
• Plain paper
• Brush pen or pencil (for sketching out your design)
• Lightbox or window

Step 1

Begin my creating your design on some spare paper with either a brush pen or pencil. You can draw around your banner blank to create a template of the size and then sketch out a design. Don't worry if it doesn't end up central, you can fix that in the next step.

Step 2

Place your final paper design onto a lightbox and put the banner on top. This is where you can make sure its perfectly positioned where you want it. 

If you don't have a lightbox you can also use a window, however I recommend using some tape to secure it to the window to make sure it doesn't move around. 

Step 3

Using a posca pen, trace over your design onto the fabric. You don't need to worry at this stage about the thin and thick strokes, just trace it in a monoline style for now.

If you don't have a posca pen, you can also try using a paintbrush and fabric paint.

Step 4

With your design traced, you can now remove your banner from the lightbox and finalise your lettering. You can either keep it monoline or you can create a faux calligraphy style by going back over your letters and manually thickening up the downstrokes.

Optional step: Iron the banner to set the posca ink into the fabric for longevity.
