The Letters by Jenni Story.
Late 2017
Picking up a pencil for the first time.
Fast forward to October 2017, I gave birth of my second daughter and very soon after I started to experience postnatal depression. Those months were very overwhelming, isolating and exhausting. In the few moments of time I had to myself each day, I wanted to find a craft to help distract me from the chaos, but didn't add to my stress by creating too much mess. So, I picked up a pencil and notepad and began lettering. It very quickly became a quiet escape for me every day.Â
2018
Turning a passion into my full time career.
What had started as a few minutes on the sofa slowly became a daily ritual. Lettering quotes that resonated with me helped calm my mind and gave me something grounding during my darkest days. It was creative, mindful and deeply personal, almost like I was journalling through letters.
As the months went by, the quotes I once wrote for myself became products, from home décor to personalised signs that I sold to family and friends. After my maternity leave finished, I returned to my job as a director of a brand agency, however quickly realised my priorities had changed, and I missed being able to letter as often as I could, so with the support of my husband, I chose to prioritise my wellbeing and follow the thing that was helping me heal.
January 2019
The Handmade Sign Company was launched.
After a couple of months of being self-employed I decided to relaunch a new business which I name The Handmade Sign Company. I primarily specialised in wedding calligraphy signage, which all began from this one simple welcome sign.Â
Mid 2019
Sharing my story.
It was in 2019 that I began hosting my first in person calligraphy workshops and finally spoke openly about my experience with postnatal depression. Sharing my story lifted a weight I didn’t realise I’d been carrying and helped me connect with others who felt the same.
November 2019
Winning my first award for my calligraphy.
Less than a year after launching my business, I was lucky to receive my first award in The Wedding Industry Awards, winning the regional category for Special Touch. I would later go on to win a national highly commended award for my work in January 2020.Â
March 2020 - March 2022
Riding the storm.
March 2020 of course brought difficulties for us all, with national lockdowns and all weddings and events postponed. My business, like many, was of course dramatically effected and with orders and future workshops on hold I had to find ways to diversify.Â
I used this time to wrote my first calligraphy book, helping people slow down and get creative from home, hoping this would help with peoples mental well-being as calligraphy had done for me.Â
As lockdowns eased, I continued to develop my work which was featured on the UK's top wedding blogs, as well as win another award for my work.
March 2022 - December 2025
Rebranding for a new direction.
After the industry reopened, I had to work through 2 years worth of postponements and uncertainty and this demand took its toll on me whilst also juggling 2 young kids, so I decided to take a break. I knew I didn't want to give up calligraphy and lettering, but Covid had impacted my mental health and given me a loss of direction and I needed to take some time to prioritise myself again.
It was during this break from making physical products that I rebranded my business to Letters by Jenni and started making lettering content on TikTok to teach others calligraphy, plus began building my range of digital resources and downloadable workbooks.
2025
Launching my new line of products and gifts.
In 2025, I started making plans to relaunch my business with a range of gifts, prints and beginner kits and made the decision to book a stand at The Creative Craft Show for October that year.Â
My in person workshops also made a comeback in 2025 and I taught hundreds of people across 4 days with my mini taster brush lettering workshops at the show, including the crafting queen that is Sara Davies.
January 2026
Opening my first bricks and mortar store and creative studio.
In January 2026, I officially got the keys to my first bricks and mortar store based at the beautiful Wymondham Windmill, Leicestershire. This was a lifelong dream of mine from even before I discovered calligraphy, and a very exciting step for the future of Letters by Jenni.
Alongside the retail space where I can sell my range of products, resources and gifts, it also has a dedicated workshop space which allows me to expand on my teachings with weekly courses, taster workshops, private events, kids activities, parties and more.
The official opening date of the studio is 31st January 2026, with a grand opening event on Saturday 7th February 2026 10 - 3pm.Â
