8 Unexpected Places to Find Calligraphy Inspiration

May 29, 2025 | Calligraphy Tutorials

Let’s be honest—some days the blank page just stares back at you. You want to letter something, but your brain feels as empty as the paper.

The good news? Inspiration is often hiding in plain sight. We just need to slow down enough to notice it. I like to keep a little note file on my phone, so if I ever see or hear anything whilst I am out and about I can just jot the phrase or word down to letter when I am back at my desk.

Here are 8 little places where you can go to find ideas for your next lettering project. (Just make sure to be mindful of any copyright if you are making anything to sell!)

1. Nature Around You

Take a walk and letter what you see or feel. “Sunshine,” “breeze,” “green”. They don't have to be anything more than some simple words that connect you to the moment to spark a calm, mindful lettering session.

2. Something You Read or Watched

A line from a book, a lyric, or a quote from your favourite show can be the perfect spark. Don’t overthink it, just pick one phrase that stood out and go from there. (Just make sure this project is for personal use only, you don't want to be selling products with someone's copyrighted words).

3. A Conversation Snippet

Ever had someone say something that just stuck with you? A kind word, a funny phrase, or even something silly your child says... write it down and bring it to life with lettering.

4. Your own name or the name of a loved one

Lettering names can be deeply personal and motivating. Plus, it’s a fun way to practice letterforms you see every day.

5. Your To-Do List

I know this sounds a little mad.. but stick with me. Your lettering doesn't always have to something profound or meaningful, especially if you are just starting out and wanting to practice. So why not try turning a mundane task like “laundry” or “email” into a mini creative challenge. It’s a fun way to loosen up and practice without any pressure.

6. Songs and Song Lyrics

A catchy lyric or phrase from your favourite song can be a great prompt. Try lettering a single impactful word or line from a song that resonates with you. (Again, be mindful of copyright rules here!)

7. How do you feel?

Practicing being mindful and acknowledging how you're feeling can be a great way to journal your mood. It can be as simple as writing words like calm, happy, hopeful, tired, or you can get creative and letter them in a style that fits with the mood.

8. Pull from a prompt
